Introduction
Augusto Boal wrote a book called Theatre of the
Oppressed，in which he stated that theatre was a
powerful tool that could be used to benefit all members
of a community．Although this idea was not new，many of
the processes he developed are very interesting and
useful in a social and/or personal growth process.
The workshop today is based on Boal's work. We are going
to show you a short scene. Please watch it all the way
through．Arter we refinished，we'11 ask you how you
felt about it．Was there anything you would like to have
changed?
After this discussion，we' 11 do the scene again．But
this time，if you want to change something，clap your
hands and we'11 stop．Then tell one of us what you want
us to say or do．Then we'11 do as you asked． You can
make a suggestion for more than one person, and you may
interrupt us as many times as you wish．
After the scene is finished，we'11 talk briefly about
how/if the changes worked. Then we'11 do the scene again．This
time，clap to make us stop，and then you come up and
take our place．Obviously you can only replace one
person at a time,but you may come up to replace someone
tbat's been replaced．You can rewind the action,do
something over again，and interrupt as much as you wish．
When the scene is over，we will briefly discuss what
happened．Then we'11 move on to a different scene and do
the whole process over again.
